
LANDSCAPING AND TURF

Rationale - Landscaping and Turf Management are two areas of horticulture requiring specialized training for professional-level competency. Not surprisingly, there is a scarcity of trained landscape professionals to provide service to the rapidly expanding housing and hotel construction markets. Hence the need for this course.
Module 1 - Elements and Principles
Aim: To impart the basic elements of landscape design and planning, and to explore various types of designs appropriate to a range of conditions.
Module 2 - Landscape Installations
Aim: To teach students how to move from concepts to practice – Elements that make for successful landscape projects.
Module 3 - Landscape Maintenance
Aim: To review the main practices involved in maintaining a variety of horticultural plants.
Module 4 - Turf InstallationAim: To expose students to the following four areas of study:
Planning a new turf installation.
Selecting and planting appropriate turf species.
Turf management.
Health and safety issues.
Module 5 - Turf Maintenance
Topics:Equipment and Tools.
Mowing.
Irrigation and Drainage.
Fertilizing.
Pest Control (IPM).
Aeration.
Renovation
Health and Safety Issues - Safe use of machinery and equipment.
Pesticide safety standards and regulations
Module 6 –Landscaping as a Business
Aim: To present the key elements involved in planning a business offering landscaping and turf management services to domestic and commercial clients.
